The more AI, the merrier? In a move to enhance social connections and enrich digital experiences, The parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, Meta, has unveiled Llama 3, a new AI assistant made to converse, offer advice, and improve user interactions.
Llama 3, which was initially available only in the United States, is now being rolled out across several African countries, including Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, with plans for further expansion in the pipeline. The AI assistant is seamlessly integrated into all Meta platforms and utilizes real-time search results from Google and Bing to give consumers access to current information while interacting online. Llama 3 also has amazing image-generating features, enabling users to produce high-quality graphics and animations with just a few keystrokes.
This could contribute to the expansion of artificial intelligence in Africa, a region where funding for companies in the field has historically lagged. The AI industry received $4.6 million of the $176 million invested by African startups, placing it tenth in a Q1 2024 financing report.
Nigeria and Kenya have both lately made efforts to encourage the usage of AI. Kenya collaborated with GIZ GmbH to create a National Artificial Intelligence policy, and Nigeria announced plans to recruit 120 specialists to create a collaborative framework for promoting AI adoption.
The possible expansion of Meta’s Llama 3 AI assistant throughout the continent might open up new channels for social interaction, artistic expression, and information access, thereby reshaping Africa’s digital landscape.
